Spirit Team

Spirit Team members assist the pastor with numerous aspects of the Sunday worship services and other special services during the year. In addition to preparing the altar area, Spirit Team encourages participation of all church members, including our young people, to serve as:

  • acolytes,
  • liturgist,
  • ushers,
  • communion stewards,
  • A/V volunteers,
  • flower providers,
  • coffee hour hosts/hostesses
  • children’s church.

Sign-up sheets are located in both the Narthex and Chapel areas, or you may contact the church office at 304-242-2455 or christumcwheeling@gmail.com if you are interested in participating in any of these opportunities to serve.

Acolytes:

Our young people who have reached their seventh birthday may participate as acolytes at either the 8:30 or 11 a.m. services. After an usher or Spirit Team member lights the acolyte stick, our acolytes proceed up the aisle to light the candles during the prelude and extinguish the candles and carry the light of Christ from the Sanctuary during the closing hymn. The liturgist and pastor are always available to assist and support our acolytes during services.

Liturgists:

Liturgists help lead parts of the 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. worship service by providing readings, prayers, and calls to worship. Liturgists can be clergy or laypeople.

Ushers:

The ushers are usually the first faces you see at church on Sunday morning. They are the hosts and hostesses for those attending worship. Their responsibilities include opening the church, passing out bulletins, finding seats for worshippers, and attending to the comfort and safety of congregants during the 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. worship services. In addition, the ushers assist with the offering and provide communion to those who choose to remain in their seats when communion is served.

Communion Stewards:

Communion stewards assist the pastor with the preparation, distribution, and cleanup of the sacrament (bread and juice) of Holy Communion at the 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. services on the first Sunday of every month. Their duties include setting up the altar, preparing the bread and wine, and tidying the altar after the service.

A/V Volunteers:

A/V Volunteers control the audio and visual components of the worship service. Their responsibilities include powering on/off and operating all necessary equipment (TVs, cameras, computers, and sound equipment) during the 11:00 a.m. worship service. The 11:00 a.m. worship service is streamed live to CUMC’s website, Facebook page, and Youtube Channel. TV’s are placed in the Sanctuary and throughout the church to display announcements and guide congregants during worship service by displaying liturgy, lyrics to hymns, scripture, and more.

Flower Providers:

Flower providers donate flowers to adorn the altar during the 8:30 and/or 11:00 a.m. worship service.

Coffee Hour Hosts/Hostesses:

Coffee Hour Hosts/Hostesses provide food and beverages for fellowship time (coffee hour) after the 8:30 and/or 11:00 a.m. worship service. They are also responsible for clean-up once coffee hour concludes.

Children’s Church:

Offered during the 11:00 worship service in the educational wing of the church, volunteers assist the lead teacher in supervising children’s activities. Nursery volunteers for children ages 0-3 years are also needed.
